[Day 15/30: Product Manager to CEO 30 Day Challenge] You are now ready to see what the world has to say! Well almost… If you're trying to validate an idea for a new product or service, it's important that you test it before committing resources to developing it. Mockups are a great way to do this because they allow you to show potential customers what their experience with your product would be like without actually building the product itself. This can save you time and money as well as help you avoid building something that people don't want!

Get comfortable with building mockups as a startup founder. You will want to use mockups in a number of ways, including:

  1. to show potential users what the product will look like once it's complete;

  2. to demonstrate how the product works;

  3. to test user engagement with certain features;

  4. to get feedback on whether or not people understand how the product works; and

  5. to solicit feedback on what features should be included in the final version of your product (and which ones should be left out).

Its time to go back to the users you spoke to during the Problem Identification phase, request another 30 minutes of their time, and get their feedback on whether the mockups you have resonate with them. You will want to use a similar approach as the last time you conducted the interview, with a curated Discussion guide with open ended questions, that guide the conversation and allow the user to openly, candidly offer their feedback.

User testing is one of the most valuable forms of feedback you can gather. No only is it informative in terms of seeing what users like/dislike, their facial and verbal expressions, body language, hesitation to click on certain features will help guide the placement of buttons, navigation, colors, UX copy and so much more.
